City of Spokane's SMART Business Recognition Program

Thank you for your interest in the City of Spokane's Business and Development Services' Sustainable Management of Assets, Resources and Technology (SMART) Recognition Program. The SMART Business Recognition Program is designed to encourage Spokane businesses to adopt policies and practices that encourage good management of financial, built, natural and human capital. In partnership with local entities (AVISTA, Department of Ecology, and Eastern Washington University), the program will recognize businesses who adopt smart capital management systems, practices and policies.

A business may be recognized by the SMART program on two levels, as a Spokane Sustainable “participant” business or as a Spokane Sustainable “certified” business.

Ultimately, both levels should lead businesses to a better work environment, a healthier more productive workforce, more customers, and an increase in the bottom line.

In recognition of your achievements, you will receive a Spokane Sustainable Business decal for the participant and/or certified program(s). The decal is in the form of a sticker as well as an electronic format for use on your letterhead and marketing materials. The decals will be provided for each of the following categories, upon qualification:

Businesses can choose to apply for recognition in any or all categories. Just fill out the application for the category(ies) and level(s) of participation most relevant to your interests and qualifications. Please note that you will need to provide additional documentation to verify your activities for the certified level.

If you have any questions about the program or the application, please contact Angie Napolitano at 625-6983 or bdsinfo@spokanecity.org

COMPLETED applications are now accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year. Once approved, applicants will receive an electronic version of the decal. Window decals will be printed and distributed once a year.

Applications can be submitted electronically or mailed/delivered to:

GREEN BUILDING
Green building is ordinarily considered a collection of certified building design, construction, and operation practices that create energy-efficient, healthier, and environmentally sustainable new and existing buildings. The established standard benchmarks for Green Building are the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, although additional standards are currently being developed. Whether your business is involved in renovating an existing space or constructing a new building, the LEED program has something for you. As stated by the United States Green Building Council, LEED-certified buildings:

  • are built as designed and perform as expected
  • have lower operating costs and increased asset value
  • are healthy and comfortable for their occupants
  • reduce waste sent to landfills
  • conserve energy and water
  • reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions
  • qualify for tax rebates, zoning allowances, and other incentives in hundreds of cities
  • demonstrate an owner's commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility

Maintaining and extending the life of an existing building can, in a more general sense, be considered a "green building" practice. Why? Because it "captures" expended energy from prior cnstruction (described as "embedded energy") as opposed to expending new energy in new construction. Based on that rationale, the City's SMART program will expand application to the participant category as follows.

Participant Level:

2 of 3 activities must be achieved

Documentation of $5,000 investment in existing building maintenance, energy efficiency, and rehabilitation over past 5 years.

Documentation of programmed commitment to invest $5,000 in improved energy efficiency of building in next 5 years.

Documentation of energy star rating of HVAC and/or major built in appliances.

Certified Level:

Qualify a completed project or building. Submit your completed project's LEED Certification or other accredited green building certification program for your completed project or building to bdsinfo@spokanecity.org for review.
