City of Spokane's SMART Business Recognition Program

Thank you for your interest in the City of Spokane's Business and Development Services' Sustainable Management of Assets, Resources and Technology (SMART) Recognition Program. The SMART Business Recognition Program is designed to encourage Spokane businesses to adopt policies and practices that encourage good management of financial, built, natural and human capital. In partnership with local entities (AVISTA, Department of Ecology, and Eastern Washington University), the program will recognize businesses who adopt smart capital management systems, practices and policies.

A business may be recognized by the SMART program on two levels, as a Spokane Sustainable “participant” business or as a Spokane Sustainable “certified” business.

Ultimately, both levels should lead businesses to a better work environment, a healthier more productive workforce, more customers, and an increase in the bottom line.

In recognition of your achievements, you will receive a Spokane Sustainable Business decal for the participant and/or certified program(s). The decal is in the form of a window cling as well as an electronic format for use on your letterhead and marketing materials. The window cling decals will be provided for each of the following categories, upon qualification:

Businesses can choose to apply for recognition in any or all categories. Just fill out the application for the category(ies) and level(s) of participation most relevant to your interests and qualifications. Please note that you will need to provide additional documentation to verify your activities for the certified level.

If you have any questions about the program or the application, please contact Teri Stripes at 625-6597, tstripes@spokanecity.org

COMPLETED applications are now accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year. Review takes about 2 weeks. Once approved, applicants will receive an electronic version of the decal. Window cling decals will be printed and distributed twice a year (June, December).

Applications can be submitted electronically or mailed/delivered to:

TRANSPORTATION/COMMUTE TRIP REDUCTION
Commute trip reduction programs and alternative transportation in reduces traffic, saves gas encourage healthy living. Everyone understands that reducing single occupancy travel can save money and reduce pollution. What we sometimes forget is how even a little reduction can save a lot. For example if Spokane's average employee commutes the area's average distance each day with average fuel efficiency, his/her travel costs is estimated to be around $2,304 a year! Commuting by alternative mode just one day a week could save the average employee 20% a year, that's over $460! That's pretty big savings for a small shift in travel behavior.
